I am a visual artist based in the North East of England. I use film, found objects, installation and primarily text in attempts to engage with the discourses of literature and literary criticism.
A lot of my work is driven by an interest in taxonomies and systems of classification. Iris Murdoch's warning that classification can never be more than a serious game; the dangers of the 'questing mind's abhorrence of vacuums', of formlessness, with regards to freedom and human individuality, is something that I endeavour to both trope and resist in my practice a whole.
I am intrigued by the experiences of women in the 26 novels written by Dame Iris and published between 1954 and 1995, and to see what results reframing her fictional depictions of these experiences can yield. Applying classification systems to existing bodies of work can generate both illuminations and absurdities and includes strategies associated with conceptual art and conceptual writing such as listing, procedure and chance.
I am interested in what this approach may offer to the critical debate surrounding this particular aspect of the author’s work.
